The Wattener Lizum is a valley to the south east of Innsbruck. The Austrian armed forces set up a training area there, having previously used it for weapons testing around circa WWI, and massively expanded during WWII. About 40000 soldiers are posted there each year and they also host joint exercises with other military forces.
The Lizumer Hütte is an alpine lodge in the area, located along a popular hiking route and in between famous sking areas of the neighbouring valleys. It pre-dates the military presence by a few years and is operated by the Austrian Alpine Society since the 1950s.
The hut is comparatively big and luxurious. Food and accommodation tends to be quite excelent.
When hiking around the area, you should check the bilboards at the hut to avoid walking into life firing exercies, stay on the designated path and generally stay away from funny looking things in the grass.
The Alpine Linux Persistence and Storage Summit is a small, multi-day conference, hosted at Lizumer Hütte. Topics around Linux I/O, storage and file systems are discussed in a relaxed atmosphere with around 40ish attendees.
The photos below are some selected ones I took at the ALPSS conference in 2022.
View from up a hill towards the north, some of the east-west bound Inntal is visible in the distance.
Same vantage point, looking west, across the military camp. The hut where the conference takes place would be further to the left, out of frame.
Further up the mountain, looking back towards the buildings in the distance.
