Rosskopf - Zillertal Alps

Back to the Gallery

Rosskopf is a surprisingly common name for mountains, this particular one is located in the western end of Salzburg, near the border to Tyrol and has a peak at an elevation of 2845m.

On the Salzburg side, starting from the Finkau restaurant at an elevation of 1419m, it can be reached via the Zittaur hut , located on a plateau next to the lower Wildgerlos lake at 2328m.

The following photos are from a hike in September of 2025 where temperatures at the altitude were already dropping again, causing some snow which mostly melted away as the day progressed.

Ascending to the Zittaur hut, looking back north out the valley. The road leading all the way back to the Finkau can be seen, terminating at the material rope way station of the Zittaur hut.

Looking north, slightly to the west, the old path towards the Zittaur hut forks off here, now blocked-off mostly due to having eroded away.

The new path leading up to the mountain. Zooming into the full resolution picture, in the upper left part, we can make out a metal stair way and catwalk mounted to the rock. People can be seen standing up on the ridge above the catwalk.

Looking to the east, there used to be glacier here.

Approaching the Zittaur hut.

A look back out the valey to the north, from the same vantage point.

Same vantage point, looking west.

The lower Wildgerlos lake.

Progressing further up the mountain, looking back down at the plateau. The smaller, upper Wildgerlos lake can be seen, feeding into the lower Wildgerlos lake.

Zooming in on the full resolution version of this picture, one can just barely make out the Zittaur hut at the edge of the lower lake with the valley in the background.

On top of the mountain ridge, advancing towards the actual Rosskopf peak turns out to be a bit tricky. The rocky path is at times quite narrow with a steep precipice on either side.

From the Rosskopf peak, looking into a north-easterly direction. One of the peaks along the ridge to the slightyl to the right of the center should be Wildkarspitze at 3073m.

Same view, without the summit cross in the way.

Turning right, facing east.

Once more, turning slightly further to the right.

Looking sout east, down the other side of the mountain. The southbound valey on the left is the Krimmler Achental . The Krimmler Tauernhaus is situated roughty at the point where the west bound valey carrying the Rainbach river forks off.

Following the line ouf sight, somewhere behind the mountain range straight ahead, is the Birnlücke that the border between Austria and Italy passes through. It can be reached on foot from the end of the Achental.
